Stagnum Benedictionum (The Pond of Blessings) 30x42 inches Colored Pencil on Canvas (polyptych)
The ambitious project has now come to completion. The whole year of going through the difficulties and overcoming the challenges of working with a large scale colored pencil artwork on canvas was all worth it. I've gained knowledge and experience that broadens my understanding about art and colored pencil. Finishing this is like earning an art degree for me, a diploma that I never had.
Thank you very much Beth. I feel more comfortable working with colored pencils on canvas. I love the texture which adds a distinct character to a piece and I don't need to frame it behind glass. A gesso primed canvas makes a suitable surface for colored pencils.
What type of colored pencils do you use? I use Prismacolors, which are quite soft and I would think would wear down quickly on a rougher surface like canvas. But I know some artists use other brands that are a bit more firm, and perhaps those would work better than I'm imagining.
I use Koh-I-Noor and Van Gogh colored pencils. Koh-I-Noor is soft and good for the initial layers, Van Gogh is a bit firm similar to Polychromos and I use it for the top layers.
