Blocking in the colors of my new Koi project. I'm using my new Polychromos and Lyra (courtesy of CPAL art friends) along with my ever trusted Koh-I-noor and Van Gogh colored pencils. I'll be trying out new methods and color schemes, and will be expanding my palette as well to include some earth tones and neutrals. Believe it or not, my tiger and other artworks are done without using brown, umber, or grey. I think it's time for ME to get acquainted with these hues.
Thank you very much Hendrik. This is a small piece, 12x18 inches, but but very challenging as I'm going to try a new approach. I do hope it will turn out to be good.
gray is the most common color range in the univers you cant represent with out it effectively but on the other hand its vary easy to make out of primaries
Most CP artists I know have more than a dozen variety of warm and cool grays and I'm puzzled as to how they used them. I prefer the richer color of making gray using primaries but I'm gonna try something new in this piece.
hmmmm this is sage advice that was given to me i'm going to give it to you. not to sound egotistical here but as an oil painter one could say that i know a thing or two about color. how to mix how, it feels when it sets in groupings, how it vibrates, flows and ebbs the way it co-mingles with other colors. my advice to you is stick with making your own grays. thous grays come from insides you they have passion and they are subtle they aren't generic like pre mix grays. you may think i'm being overly dramatic here but gray is the glue that holds a piece together. people make them and they don't even realise they are doing it. the range is so emens its the most complex color and i think be using pre mixes you are walking away from what it means to create your own work. you are letting some chemist decide how your work should look its up to you but that's the advice of an old oil Painter. i never use shades or hues i only mix my own color. the only color i ever used that was not mine was Cad red Med. and i never did it again after that tube was gone (i hate to wast)all my paint is the direct pigments one gets from the earth. that is why my colors are subtle and pure though i may not be the best painter on earth there is a real sincerity to my work its very pure because of the way i mix my colors. so now that ive made my self sound like a master LOL don't do the pre mixes of any thing you stick with your pure colors and make your own way in the world it something you will look back on latter in your art life with real pride.
This is going to be fantastic, love the bright Koi colours, it's indeed amazing youndidn't use the earth tones for your tigers, those are about the only colours I use. That's what I like so much about your Koi's, those colours make me happy
